On 15th November, the Grammy nominations for 2023 were released. Fans of music were eager to find out whether their fave had gotten nominated.

We all know the Grammys can be a bit controversial with their nominations and award winners. I’ll never forget the time when Rihanna was nominated for 6 Grammys in 2017 and was left empty-handed. This was devastating because Anti( released in January 2016) is Rihanna’s best work to date.

I think this year’s nominations left people feeling a bit mixed. For starters, Beyonce was nominated for 9, which is well deserved. Renaissance was truly a wonderful album. It was the soundtrack to my summer. Beyonce has been nominated for Album of the year four times. In her 20+ career, she has never won one. Could 2023 be the year for Beyonce?

No surprise but the one and only Adele received seven nominations, for Record of the Year (“Easy on Me”), Album of the Year (30), Song of the Year (“Easy on Me”), Best Pop Solo Performance (“Easy on Me”), Best Pop Vocal Album (30), Best Music Video (“Easy on Me”), and Best Music Film (Adele One Night Only.) Harry styles earned 6 Grammy nominations and some nominations are from big categories such as record of the year(As it was) and Album of the year (Harry’s House)

Rap fans were content with the likes of Kendrick Lamar( Mr. Morale and the Big steppers) and Pusha T (It’s almost dry) gaining nominations for best rap album. Not to mention Kendrick Lamar has also received an album of the year nomination (not surprised). However many were not happy with rapper Jack Harlow receiving a nomination in the same category. This reminds me of the time when Macklemore was nominated and won a Grammy for best rap in 2014 over Kendrick Lamar.

This Grammy win gave people an eye-opener to how the Grammys really operate. There was an absolute uproar with this win. In fact, many people believe that this Grammy win ruined Macklemore’s chances of success in the future. As much as I like Jack Harlow, his album fell flat for me. So if he wins, it could be a Macklemore 2.0 situation.

Another Grammy snub that people were quick to notice was Nicki Minaj, Rosalia, and Summer Walker. I wasn’t surprised with Minaj as she only released a single rather than a whole album. Although, Super Freaky Girl did earn the number 1 spot on the billboard top 100 and broke countless records.

Summer walker and Rosalia both released great albums this year. I was disappointed with both of these wonderful ladies not receiving any nominations. Both of these albums were definitely on my playlist and on repeat throughout the year. So it’s surprising that they did not get any Grammy buzz or recognition.

Summer walker responded to the Grammy nominations with a statement on Instagram. She spoke about how she could show her record sales but understands that the real award is her supportive fans. In response to Rosalia, rapper and producer Pharell Williams posted a picture of Rosalia’s album cover on his Instagram story and atted the recording Grammys Instagram.

For those of you who don’t know, Pharell Williams was one of the main producers for this album. So I can imagine his dismay when he found out he got no nominations for it.

Personally, I would have loved for Nigerian Singer and Songwriter Tems to receive the best new artist nomination. Tems has worked with the likes of Wizkid, Beyonce, Drake, and Rihanna. Her Previous EPs have proved that she is a standout star. She is also the songwriter behind the Black Panther: Wakanda Forever hit single ‘Lift me Up’ performed by Rihanna. She had a global smash hit with wizkid last summer( essence) and even was even a part of Beyoncé’s current Grammy-nominated album.

So Hopefully one day, she will get the true recognition she deserves.

So whether the Grammys got it right or wrong this year. If you want to see it all go down, the Grammys will take place on Sunday 5th February 2023 in Los Angeles
