Divine Ikubor professionally known by his stage name Rema, is a Nigerian singer, musician, and rapper. He rose to prominence with the release of the song “Dumebi”. In 2019, he later signed a record deal with Jonzing World, a subsidiary of Mavin Records. He likes to brand his music as afrorave which consists of influences of Arabian and Indian music which has led to him having a way one of the strongest fanbases in the country known as Ravers.

In March 25 2022, Rema dropped his debut album Rave and Roses. The album included features from the likes of Chris Brown,AJ Tracey, 6lack and Yseult.

Calm down (second single from the album) charted across Europe, reaching number one on the Belgian Ultratop 50, Dutch Top 40 and Dutch Single Top 100. In August 2022 Rema released the remix of calm down with selena Gomez. The single debuted at number 91 on Billboard Hot 100.

Since then the single has gone gold in the US and silver in the UK.

The album charted 10 songs on the US Billboard Afrobeats Chart following its debut week.

Fave Tracks From The Album

Divine– this song is a great opener to Rema’s personal life, which we never really hear about. Rema talks about the complexities of his birth on a nice rhythmic beat.

Addicted– this track gives me 80s synthc- pop vibes. I feel like you’d either be on a night drive blasting this song out loud or getting ready for a party.

Dirty– if you’re are looking for a song to make you feel sexy, this is it. The sound of the saxophone serendes. When rema sings, you feel as if he is talking about you.

Soundgasm-this song is beyond frisky, especially when you learn what about. I won’t go in to detail as I’m trying to keep this post PG.

FYN ft AJ Tracey– I know there is a thin line between cockiness and confidence but Rema oozes the latter. I mean who doesn’t love a man who knows his worth, it’s a massive attraction. The repetitive chorus will boost your own self esteem. Aj Tracey’s poetic bars compliment the tone of the song.

Rema’s Shows Deserved All The Hype

In the beginning of November, Rema had his London tour at Brixton o2 academy. His concerts caught traction on TikTok for serenading and caressing women on stage. I knew Rema would be a great performer but his concerts surprised me (in a good way). The way he was serenading these woman, you too would want to be on stage.

I missed out- looking back I wish I got tickets because the TIKTOK’S were giving me great FOMO.

My favourite moments of the UK tour was when Rema brought out Dave. Both DAVE and Rema are Benin boys so link up was a must. Hopefully the two will release a record together because that would be insane.

Another favourite moment of mine was when Rema got a young lady’s wig and started dancing with it. Then the crowd started chanting ‘REMA we wanna party’. I’ve never really seen any performer spontaneously dance with a wig, it was comedic yet unusual.

Another thing I noticed from REMA is that his MIC is always on. The boy has melodic vocals that will leave you in a trance. Great breath control also, which is incredible rare these days.

As an Edo girl myself, Rema is doing me proud, can’t wait to see what he has in store for the future.
